Norwich Theatre Royal – Online Booking System

Summary:

The Norwich Theatre Royal use a web based ticketing system to process their on-line bookings from their website.  This system architecture developed problems coping with demand for on-line ticket sales.

InTouch Systems was approached by Norwich Theatre Royal management and asked to look at the issue, with a view to finding a cost effective solution. The team from InTouch Systems provided a  ‘Load Balancing’ package for the Theatre which would utilise the capacity across all of the servers, but still keep the consistent single customer facing website URL.

The problem the Theatre Royal faced:

Demand for the on-line booking system from customers wishing to order their tickets this way, had increased by 10% over the last 2 years, include much bigger growth for genres like stand-up comedy, and for booking via new trends in technology such as smart phones and tablets.  The system was subject to extreme peaks at busy periods, specifically the 24 hour period after release date for new show tickets.

The current on-line booking system became quickly overloaded at peak periods because the program itself was only designed to allow for 250 concurrent users per server.  Directly after the release of new tickets, the demand could quickly exceed this number of users, causing the system to become unresponsive and stall the ticket booking process for everyone.

The existing system was running on a single physical server on site at the Theatre Royal.  If there were any issues with the server itself, this would shut the booking system down.

The user experience of the booking system was frustrating.  Users could be thrown out of the system and when they went back in, any seats picked and waiting in their on-line basket had disappeared.  The seats could have been allocated and sold elsewhere whilst they were offline, so users had to re-select seats and hope they could get through to the payment system second time around.
